What is Sustainable Development?

what is sustainable development

In the last few decades a relatively new concept of sustainable development was revealed, however till day not many people have complete knowledge of it. This article will explain about the term and the concept behind it, so our readers can benefit from the useful info. So, sustainable development points to the aspect of human development which is done by using resources to meet the aims or requirements of human beings but at the same time also ensure the sustainability of natural resources and the environment. This way these aims or requirements can be met in future as well not just the present.

In other words, the concept also means that we, as humans should also care about the natural resources and environment while fulfilling our requirements, so our future generations can also use these resources to fulfill their requirements.

Some History

Although the term is related to “sustained yield”, a forestry term which is a simple translation of German term “nachhaltiger Ertrag” which goes back to somewhere in 1713. However, the terms “sustainable development” was coined in United Nations’ Brundtland Report which was issued back in 1987. Although, you can find various definitions of the terms but the standard definition of sustainable development also appeared in this report by UN in 1987 which is now recognized and used widely:

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Sustainable Development and Individual Roles

Many people think that sustainable development can be achieved through the measures which the government of every respective country takes. However, we cannot overlook the fact that every individual’s contribution can help us achieve what is known as global sustainable development. Therefore, we should also try our best as individuals to to achieve it; here are some tips that will help you out if you are interested to preserve the environment and future of your children.

  • We have to make sure that we do our best to prevent the pollution because it affects our environment very negatively be it water, air or land pollution it’s nothing but a poison for Mother Nature.
  • When talking about environment, the growing phenomena of Global Warming cannot be simply overlooked. There’s a lot we can do to reduce global warming individually. For starters, we can start planting trees and use hybrid cars.
  • Energy is a limited resource and that’s the reason countries with vast resources of oil are quite rich. However, this also means that if we don’t preserve and care about these resources one day will eventually deplete. As a result, our future generations will face a lot of difficulties. Therefore, we should try to save energy as much as possible!
  • Go Green – Going green will not only help you to save energy but at the same time you can use techniques which will also preserve the environment around you.
