National Center of Excellence in Geology to hold a One Day Workshop on Gold Mineralization in Islamabad

NATIONAL CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN GEOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF PESHAWAR

One day workshop on “Towards better understanding of gold mineralization of northern areas of Pakistan” is being organized by the National Center of Excellence in Geology, University of Peshawar in collaboration with the University of Houston, USA. The workshop shall take place in the Auditorium of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Islamabad on December 18, 2013. This workshop is funded by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Islamabad and the United States Department of State under the Pak-US joint Academic & Research program. The Chairman HEC has consented to be the Chief Guest of the event. According to Prof. Dr. M. Tahir Shah, the chief organizer of the workshop and senior professor at the Center, over hundred geoscientists from various universities and R & D organizations of the country will be attending the workshop.

The workshop aims at training and disseminating the results of the research carried out by Dr M. Tahir Shah and his colleagues at the University of Houston, USA among Pakistani professionals and undergraduate researchers. It

Various challenges and advanced techniques in mineral exploration will be highlighted and discussed in the workshop.  The workshop also aims to present case studies regarding Environmental Degradation associated with gold mining in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. A problem that remained neglected for several years. Modern techniques like the use of Remote Sensing and GIS for gold exploration are the main stay of the workshop.
