WWF Nature Carnival entertains residents of Islamabad & Rawalpindi

ISLAMABAD: 26th February,2012 A large number of people from the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi were entertained at the World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF – Pakistan) Annual Travelling Nature Carnival on Sunday.

The event was organised in collaboration with Indus Motor Company (IMC) and aimed to enhance awareness about nature conservation among students and the general public through interactive games and competitions.

 

Over 80 schools, 20 colleges and universities including Quaid-e-Azam University,RIPHA,International Islamic University,Islmabad and more across Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Nowshera, Kharian, Jhelum and Peshawar participated by constructing 3D models and giving live presentations at the venue and the event is also covered by media and FM99.

Various activities were arranged in the carnival, including an art competition, quiz competition, essay competition, interactive 3D model making competition, magic shows, environmental puppet shows, a lucky draw, live music and an environmental theatre, some other interactive games and activities etc.

WWF-Pakistan has been working on environmental education for the past two decades; the travelling nature carnival is an integral part of its school outreach. To increase the scale of the nature carnival, WWF–Pakistan collaborated with IMC to promote its school environment programme this year.

More than 100 project stalls were set up on various themes such as habitat conservation of endangered species (snow leopards, green turtle, dolphin), water conservation, solid waste management, energy conservation – alternate energy, tourism vs eco-tourism: explore wetlands of Pakistan for eco-Tourism, documentaries on industrial pollution/solid waste management and sustainable eco-architecture/ agriculture/ climate change, mitigation and adaptation/ alternate energy.

27 branches of Roots School System exhibited innovative models out of 80 different schools. Roots 82 -A Satellite Town won 1st prize in category “Tourism Vs Eco tourism, exploring wetlands of Pakistan” ,2nd prize won by RSS Wah Cantt Branch in the same category & 3rd position also won by RSS 4 Harley Boys Branch in the same category. Roots 76/3 Harley Branch clinched 1st Position in the theme “Habitat conservation of endangered species”. In documentary competition Roots College International G-8 Campus won 3rd prize.”Best stall presentation” award was also won by RSS 77-A Satellite Town Campus. The Award for maximum registration for WWF Green School Programme also won by Roots School System.

The travelling nature carnival is a culmination of these joint environmental endeavours. The funds raised from the carnival will go towards WWF – Pakistan’s conservation projects.

 

Baitul Maal Chairman Zamurad Khan was the chief guest at the event and Akira Kono from the Japanese embassy was the guest of honour. Zamurad Khan congratulated the organisers on arrange these environment-friendly activities and distributed shields and certificates among winning institutes
