Determination Of Inhibitory Effect Of Three Phenolic Compounds On Selected Seed Germination

Phenolic compounds are one of the pollutants, which have cumulative hazardous effects on the environment. These organic chemicals, especially for aromatic compounds, are rather resistant to natural biodegradation and persist in the environment. Phenolic compounds are the most common representatives of toxic organic pollutants.Phenolic compounds are wide spread in seeds, fruits and other plant tissues occurring either in free state or conjugated with sugars as glycosides and esters.Rearch studies shows that many phenolics are inhibitory to germinating seeds or growing plants.phenolic compound effect fundamental plant process such as photosynthesis, chlorophyll production, protein synthesis, respiration and membrane permeability.phenolic concentration in refinery effluents must be reduced to environmentally acceptable and harmless level through utilizing effective and practical treatment methods and proper treatment before safely discharges to water bodies such as activated carbon absorption, ion exchange, liquid-liquid extraction and by chemical oxidation. The chemical properties and quantities of phenolic determine their toxicity and persistence in the environment and their interaction with targeted and non targeted organisms has extensively damage the ecosystem through entry into the blood chains. The net result has been bioaccumulation and biomagnifications of these xenobiotics in aquatic and terrestrial organisms.

Three phenolic compounds(Resorcinol-nitro phenol and amino nepthol) were analyse for the inhibition of seed germination of five plant species Wheat(Triticum aestivum),Maize(Zea mays),Pea(Pisum sativum),Lettuce(Lactuca sativa),Raddish(Raphanis stavis). The samples were germinated in phenolic compounds and analyse for germination rate, root and shoot length and by mass value of the germinated seeds.

The germination rate in Resorcinol was less as compared to Amino nepthol, while P-nitro phenol completely inhibits the seed germination. The root and shoot also more affected by Resorcinol as compare to Amino Nepthol.same is the case for bio mass value which was less for Resorcinol. So these research conclude that phenolic compounds badly affect the seed germionation, inhibit their growth due to their toxicity and chemical properties.
